The Red River and many of its tributaries flow through Wolfe, Menifee, and Powell counties in eastern Kentucky. Creeks like Swift Camp, Gladie, Clifty, and Indian are special places to those who call these communities home. Even though the Red River watershed is a beloved resource with beautiful forests, scenic streams, and diverse wildlife, the waterways are being threatened by pollution including loss of streamside vegetation, runoff from towns, agriculture, and mines.
The good news is there are ways to protect high quality areas and restore those waters that are polluted. To protect these waterways, KWA is helping to write the Red River Gorge Watershed Protection Plan and Implementation project. A watershed plan is a record of what is happening in and around the waterways. The plan will help determine the best waters for protection and address areas that need improvement.
We need your help! A watershed planning team to address local issues is crucial to the success of this project. The idea behind a watershed team is that every local stakeholder is invited to the table: local residents, recreational users, business owners, elected officials, community groups, and any other interested party. Together, this team will share local knowledge about the creek and the land around it, make recommendations for how to improve the creek, and get involved in education and outreach activities.
You do not need prior experience or special knowledge to participate. All you need is a desire to learn, share your knowledge, and help out. We hope you will join us!
